Rapid testing stations are being installed in airports across the U.S. in an effort to both curb the spread of COVID-19 and entice passengers to, once again, take flight.

The first installations were rolled out Tuesday, debuting in Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. Manufactured by XpresCheck, a subsidiary of global wellness company XpresSpa, they are able to provide test results within a few days.

Set up in spaces formerly used for airport conveniences such as massages, they feature many of the tools available in a regular clinic and the company expects to reduce testing times to 15-minutes by the end of the month.

“As the CEO has told me, when this COVID pandemic hit, his chairman turned to him and says, ‘what can we do to make it safe and safer?’ From the idea in his head to 75 days later, we had up and running in JFK XpresCheck. That is American ingenuity at its best. 75 days they were testing whether an individual was exposed to COVID or had the antibodies.”

— Kevin O’Toole, chairman – Port Authority Board of Commissioners

Testing stations are also being unveiled in La Guardia and JKF. Construction has begun on facilities to be installed in several other airports, including Atlanta and San Francisco.
