Joe Biden is stirring the latest coronavirus fears to downplay President Trump’s efforts to restore economic growth. On Thursday, Biden attacked the president over his push to reopen the economy and highlighted the reports of increased coronavirus cases in parts of the country.

“There’s no victory to be celebrated,” he said. “We’re still down nearly 15 million jobs and the pandemic is getting worse, not better.”

The U.S. posted an all-time high in employment for June, adding almost 5 million jobs.

The former vice president, however, is unhappy with these results. He also failed to mention the rising number of recoveries, which have approached half of all coronavirus cases since March.

“Without a uniform plan from the federal government that state and local leaders can use to inform their reopening plans, this is going to continue to be worse than it would have been otherwise,” stated Biden. “Recovery will be slower, unemployment will stay higher than it should be.”

Most economists have contradicted the presumptive Democrat nominee’s remarks. According to them, the latest jobs reports suggested the American economy is poised for a robust rebound once all COVID restrictions are lifted.

A sheriff in Clay County, Florida has a message for violent protesters: “Lawlessness, that’s unacceptable in this country, that’s unacceptable in Clay County.”

Sheriff Darryl Daniels released a video this week, in which he announced he’ll deputize every lawful gun owner in the county if protests get too out of control.

“If you threaten to come to Clay County and think for one second that we’ll bend our backs for you, you’re sadly mistaken,” added Daniels.

His remarks came amid continued nationwide protests over police brutality. Many of these demonstrations have led to an increasingly tense atmosphere between protesters and law enforcement.

According to Sheriff Daniels, the relationship between Clay County authorities and the public has been “great and not strained.” He has since asked that same community for their help to stop violence before it happens.

He went on to clarify his department has every intention of assisting peaceful demonstrations, but reiterated any acts of violence will not be tolerated.

“We’ll protect your constitutional rights as long as you remain under the umbrella of peaceful protests,” said Daniels. “The second you step out from under the protection of the Constitution, we’ll be waiting on you.”

He is currently nearing the end of his first term as sheriff. He’ll be facing off against five other challengers in a primary scheduled to take place in August.

Top congressional leaders have been briefed on intelligence that Russia allegedly offered bounties to kill American troops in Afghanistan. The director of National Intelligence, along with the heads of the CIA and NSA, met with the Gang of Eight on Thursday.

The group includes House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, among others.

Questions have mounted in recent days over whether the allegations are true and if President Trump was aware of them. According to the White House, the president was not briefed before this week.

Officials have claimed there was no evidence to back up the allegations.

“It’s unverified intelligence, it’s continually being assessed,” stated Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany. “The Department of Defense has said they do not know of any Americans that have been killed in relation to this unverified intelligence that’s currently being assessed.”

The House and Senate Intel committees have also been briefed on the matter.

Florida set a new record of daily coronavirus cases after it reported more than 10,000 new infections this week. The state’s Department of Health has confirmed there were 10,108 new cases reported in the state on Wednesday, along with 68 deaths.

Governor Ron DeSantis has taken steps to curb the spread of the virus, including closing down bars and some beaches. During a press conference last week, he claimed the rise in cases could be partly attributed to those who are asymptomatic.

“Most of them, if they do have symptoms, will be so mild that they would not even need to seek medical attention,” said DeSantis. “But you are somebody that would potentially be able to spread the virus to more vulnerable groups.”

Florida now has over 169,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases and a total of more than 37,00 fatalities.

In the meantime, the director of the National Institutes of Health has weighed in on the development of a viable coronavirus vaccine. On Thursday, Dr. Francis Collins shared plans to provide 1 million rapid, on-site COVID-19 tests per day around September, which will allow for schools and sports to pick back up.

He also expressed he is hopeful that the Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed program will produce a realistic treatment for COVID-19 before 2021.

“We are all very optimistic that the goal we have set to have a vaccine that works and is safe by the end of 2020 will be met by one of the vaccines. I just mentioned one, but of course, there’s several all being conducted side by side that we would then have by early 2021. 350 million doses of a vaccine that is safe and effective.” – Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the National Institutes of Health

According to the director, the goal is a bold one, but it’s the right one for America.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) announced restaurants will not be allowed to open for indoor dining as his state eases into phase three of its reopening plan.

De Blasio delivered the news at a press conference Wednesday, backtracking on an earlier plan to allow indoor dining at a limited capacity starting July 6.

The announcement followed Dr. Anthony Fauci’s briefing Tuesday, where he emphasized the risk of case numbers escalating if the country reopens prematurely.

“We see a lot of problems and we particularly see problems resolving around people going back to bars and restaurants indoors,” said de Blasio. “And indoors is the problem more and more, the science is showing up more and more.”

It’s still unclear when indoor dining will resume in the city, but restaurants were allowed to resume outdoor dining late last month.

19 Tips to Keep Your Pantry— and Your Belly—Full

My grandfathers were farmers who lived through The Great Depression. My parents spent 20 years in the military before returning to Mississippi to purchase a hobby farm.

As a result, some of the people who influenced me the most knew how to make do with what they had. Of course, they didn’t call it “prepping”; they didn’t call it anything, because hunting, fishing, gardening and putting up food were just part of life. Not only was the food cheaper, it tasted better and had no chemicals added to it. The fact that it lasted for years was just an added benefit.

1.0 PLANNING AHEAD

1.1 Canning

This method is the most effective way to preserve ready-to-eat food to last a long time. This is especially true, because pretty much anything can be canned, either via a water bath or pressure cooking, including meat and fish. In fact, I learned about canning fish on the Kenai Peninsula, watching native Alaskans put up salmon. All they did was drop some spices into the bottom of a mason jar, shove some salmon in and drop it in a pressure cooker. It was still delicious when I ate it some time later.

1.2 Timing

Years ago, I watched my aunt pick green tomatoes in October and spread them out on newspaper in a back room. I didn’t understand what she was doing, but I also didn’t understand why my grandfather had planted tomatoes in July and August. Nevertheless, it made a lot more sense when we were slicing those home-grown tomatoes to go with Christmas dinner! Tomatoes will slowly ripen off the vine, providing fresh flavor and great nutritional value for months, and they can be canned in a variety of ways or even fried green.

1.3 Greenhouses

A self-contained growing environment can be one of the best tools for surviving, because it can provide food all year long. Greenhouses are best when built before a situation happens, although setting one up in fall and early winter is better than nothing. A quick, simple one involves just a frame and lots of clear plastic. You can also buy kits that are available in a number of styles and sizes.

1.4 Cold Kills

While greenhouses are the best way to grow vegetables in the colder months, the greater danger to plants is frost, not temperature. Therefore, you can extend growing time by a few weeks to a month by using tomato stakes and clear plastic to keep the weather at bay for a while. Unfortunately, sustained freezing temperatures will kill plants.

2.0 EAT YOUR GREENS

2.1 Edibility

Trying to figure out which plants are edible during a survival situation can be quite difficult. Consequently, plan ahead; purchase and study an edible-plant guide. This can be a godsend, particularly in winter, when very few fresh plants are available to eat. Be sure to find a guide that concentrates on the area where you plan to endure the situation.

2.2 Edibility Test

The best way to determine whether an unknown plant is edible is the Universal Edibility Test; but, in a pinch, place moistened plants on the outside of the lip for a few minutes. If there is any inflammation or burning of the lip, the plant is poisonous. If not, it is usually safe. However, it is best to learn which plants are edible in your area before this skill is needed.

2.3 Nuts are excellent food sources, especially in the fall. Hickory nuts and chestnuts can be roasted and eaten whole or ground up to add to other dishes. Acorns are particularly abundant but must be leached to remove bitter-tasting tannins. Afterward, they can be roasted or boiled and then eaten or even ground up to make flour. White oak acorns are among the best.

3.0 PURSUIT OF PROTEIN

3.1 Weapons

While modern firearms, bows, crossbows and other types of weapons are extremely effective, over millennia, man survived on much smaller tools, such as the slingshot and even the sling and stone. With practice, both can be used to take a wide variety of small game and possibly even larger prey. In addition, it is not very difficult to build a primitive bow and arrow.

Even small greenhouses can provide a great deal of food throughout the year—even during the coldest months.

3.2 Trapping

Running a trap line can be a great way to earn extra money, and it also keeps skills sharp and traps on hand and ready to use. Predators and furbearers, such as bobcats, raccoons and more, provide meat, and their fur makes great clothing and shelter.

Seasonings can last a long time, but they still need to be stored with as little exposure to air and sunlight as possible. Small canning jars and resealable vacuum pouches work well. Some spices can be stored whole and then ground later.

3.3 Snares

Even without the benefit of modern materials, early men and women learned how to use snares and deadfalls to trap game. Both are very simple to make, especially a metal wire choke snare, although shoe and boot laces or other types of cordage can be used in a pinch.

Dutch ovens are great cooking tools, because they can be used to create almost any dish. They come in a variety of sizes.

3.4 Fish Traps

A fish basket trap is well worth the time to learn how to construct. This simple, but effective, device can be built by weaving branches together in a long cone, similar to a basket. The front should have a wide opening to allow fish to enter; it should also narrow toward the other end to prevent fish from exiting. These traps work best in freely flowing waters.

Chestnuts can be steamed or boiled, but roasting is the traditional method, and it is pretty easy to do over an open fire.

3.5 Cold Fish

Even in winter, fish can be caught, whether the water’s surface is frozen over or not. Limb lines and automatic fishermen can be used to fish all day and night while you’re otherwise occupied. Tie a baited line to a supple limb near the water and let the strength of the limb fight the fish. Alternatively, dig a hole through the ice and tie the line to a stout limb laid across the hole. Check these lines regularly to gather your catch.

3.6 Hunting

Hunting is one of the best methods for obtaining large amounts of protein-rich meat. However, finding effective areas are crucial for your success. Because everything you’re after must drink, consider setting up downwind of a water source, especially during early morning and late evening. Another place to consider is a trail junction.

4.0 MENU HELP

4.1 Simple Seasonings

Spices last a long time, but they will lose flavor, particularly if exposed to air. Look for pre-mixed packages, such as taco and ranch dressing mixes, that are on sale. Vacuum-seal them in bunches and store them with food caches. Most mixes can be used on both meats and vegetables.

Root cellars, such as these in Canada, are among the earliest forms of keeping food preserved. They are easily built by tunneling into a hill or digging into the ground and then adding an insulating barrier to protect them from the weather.

4.2 Salt

Those who live near the coast have an easy way to obtain some seasoning, because saltwater can be boiled down (which also kills bacteria and other disease-carrying organisms). Alternatively, simply leave it out in the sun to let the water evaporate. If larger quantities can be obtained, the salt can be used to preserve meat and fish for future use.

4.3 Can Do

Canned goods, whether commercial or homemade, can be used to make a variety of dishes that can go a long way with the right seasonings. One of my favorites uses one can each of corn, kidney beans, pinto beans and black beans, three cans of Ro-Tel tomatoes, one can of green chilies and a packet each of ranch dressing mix and taco seasonings. Add ground meat to beef it up or some additional water to make it stretch.

4.4 Backwoods Bakery

Baking can be difficult outside, but Dutch ovens have been used for centuries to make a variety of meals and breads. You can even gather coals around steel pots or spread flour mixtures on hot rocks to cook bread. A doughy mixture of flour and water can even be wrapped around a stick and held over a fire. Acorns, properly prepared, can make a decent bread.

5.0 STORAGE

5.1 Cold Storage

Cold is used to preserve many foods—think the refrigerator and freezer. In the winter, foods that should be kept cold can be placed outside to stay fresh. The ideal fresh food temperature is 35 to 37 degrees (F), while frozen foods are best stored around 0 degrees (F). Be sure to store food items in shady areas and protect them from predators … both two- and four-legged.

5.2 Root Cellars

Underground storage is an excellent way to keep food cold without freezing. An appropriate area can easily be built by digging a hole into the side of a hill or into the ground. Be sure to dig down at least 4 feet and use tree saplings to keep food off the ground, as well as for insulation. Be sure to add a secure door to keep out unwanted “guests.”

President Trump said the latest monthly jobs report proves the U.S. economy is roaring back. During a White House press briefing Thursday, he touted the historic 4.8 million jobs added in June.

The president said the boost in consumer confidence, fewer workers dropping out of the labor force and the soaring stock market shows the economy is quickly recovering from its shutdown.

President Trump also noted that his administration and Congress have made efforts to ensure this success and discussed how the Paycheck Protection Program helped save several businesses and jobs.

The president added that the economy will only get better from here and he anticipated the third quarter will show great numbers before the 2020 elections. He also said 2021 will be a historic year for jobs, companies and growth.

Vice President Mike Pence also expressed optimism over job growth. In an interview Thursday, he echoed the president’s remarks that the administration is very pleased with the new numbers.

The vice president said the report shows the economy is coming back strong, which reflects the resilience and hard work of the American people. Pence also credited the growth to the president’s actions from the beginning of the pandemic until now.

“It’s also a testament unquestionably to the historic steps President Trump took to see this nation through the coronavirus pandemic, the mitigation efforts, the rescue packages,” he stated.

Pence finished by saying it’s a great day for America and a tribute to the president’s leadership.

Rudy Giuliani said the leaker behind the so-called ‘Russian bounties’ reports should face a lengthy prison term.

While talking to reporters Wednesday, the president’s personal attorney said intelligence reports behind Russia’s alleged payments to Taliban were classified information. He added that releasing them to the broader public may undermine America’s national security.

Giuliani also said intelligence reports do not unequivocally confirm Russia’s alleged actions or President Trump’s reaction to it.

“That was actionable intelligence, that was raw, disputed, unresolved,” he stated. “I can’t think of a worse crime…it’s not quite treason, but its close and what he revealed is something that is in dispute.”

Giuliani also denounced the New York Times for trying to immediately capitalize on the reports to attack President Trump. “If the New York Times had any integrity they wouldn’t use it,” the attorney continued.

Active, reserve and National Guard service members who mobilized to work in medical centers, man testing outposts, distribute supplies and otherwise support their communities in pandemic response are authorized to receive the Armed Forces Service and/or Humanitarian Service medals, per a Defense Department memo signed Tuesday.

To pin it on, eligible troops must have been activated after Jan. 31, according to the memo, but an area of mobilization is not specified, as long as the mission was in direct response to COVID-19.

“Award authorities determine which operations and/or activities are deemed to be humanitarian in nature based off of HSM award criteria,” says the memo, signed by Matthew Donovan, defense under secretary for personnel and readiness.

Active duty, reserve and National Guard members serving under federal orders will have their awards approved by their service secretaries, according to the memo. Those serving on state orders will be approved by the National Guard Bureau chief, an Air Force Gen. Joseph Lengyel.

However, service members are not automatically eligible for both, the memo says, “based on the same activities, deployment, and/or period of time.”

That is to say, it’s one or the other, unless a particular member has been mobilized twice.

For the AFSM, a service member needs to have spent at least 30 days on COVID-19 response ― not necessarily consecutively ― after an activation specifically for the effort, or after being reassigned from a primary duty to support it.

That time requirement knocks down to just one day on-the-job if the service member contracted COVID-19 as a result.

More than 45,000 National Guardsmen alone activated in all 50 states, three territories and the District of Columbia, in addition to reservists and active-duty medical personnel who manned the hospital ships Mercy and Comfort, as well as working in civilian hospitals.

More than 2,000 National Guardsmen have been diagnosed with COVID-19, though the bureau has not been separately tracking cases in those who have mobilized, spokesman Master Sgt. Mike Houk told Military Times.

Currently 1,021 of those cases are active, he said.
