The Senate reconvened Tuesday with coronavirus relief at the forefront of discussions. Both parties are in favor of sending out a second stimulus check to Americans, but disagree over the terms.
The Democrat-controlled House passed the $3 trillion HEROES Act in May, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called it a “liberal wish list.”
The Republican-controlled Senate proposed the $1 trillion HEALS Act during their last session, but Democrats don’t believe it goes far enough.
There were discussions between the White House and Democrat leaders over a “skinny” stimulus bill, but those talks fell through. Meanwhile, the House will reconvene next week.
McConnell confirmed the chamber will be voting on a “targeted” coronavirus relief bill as soon as this week. He released a statement Tuesday in which he said the proposed legislation is focused on the most urgent health care, education and economic issues.

The Senate majority leader didn’t specify what the new GOP proposal will include, but reports indicate it may feature funding for enhanced unemployment benefits and small business loans.
