Several children in New York have reportedly come down with an illness doctors believe is connected to the coronavirus. According to the New York Health Department, at least 64 minors have developed a “multi-symptom inflammatory syndrome.”
Symptoms included rashes, red eyes, abdominal distress and high fevers, which lasted three to four days. Experts believe this is a child’s immune reaction to an exposure of a virus, which likely occurred weeks prior. Many of the young patients have reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies.
Doctors are investigating the condition’s similarities with Kawasaki disease.
“Right now we’re seeing an overlap of symptoms, and it may be in part because we know COVID impacts clotting and blood formation,” stated Dr. Elizabeth Haines. “It could also impact the blood vessels.”
Similar cases have been reported in the U.K. and Europe. Last week, a World Health Organization official asked clinicians across the globe to be on the lookout for this and “to ensure they capture information on children systematically.”
