A memorial service was held in Alabama this weekend in honor of late civil rights icon John Lewis. Saturday’s memorial was held in Lewis’s hometown, where his loved ones gathered to celebrate the “Boy from Troy.”
The congressman from Georgia died on July 17th. This memorial was one of several that will be held this weekend to pay tribute to Lewis.
On Monday, a ceremony will be held in Washington, D.C., where Lewis will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda.
“As we depart this place, may the humility of John Robert Lewis keep us focused on serving others, may his willingness to cause good trouble prevent us from tolerating injustice, and may his example inspire a new generation,” stated one memorial speaker.

On Sunday, his casket will be carried across the Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge, where he and other civil rights activists were beaten 55 years ago on “Bloody Sunday.”
His final stop will be in Atlanta, Georgia, which he represented in Congress for more than 30 years. Lastly, he will be laid to rest in the South View Cemetery on Thursday.
