A Senate panel has passed legislation to ban the use of the Chinese owned app TikTok on government devices. The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs voted unanimously to approve the bill on Wednesday.
The legislation was first introduced by Republican Senators Josh Hawley and Rick Scott. It has since been sent to the Senate floor for a full vote.
National security officials have raised concerns that Americans’ personal information on the app could be sent to the Chinese government. During a hearing in March, Sen. Hawley said the bill is necessary to protect the security and data of every American.
“It is required under Chinese law to share user data with Beijing. TikTok has admitted that it has sent user data to China. To put it bluntly, this is a major security risk.” – Josh Hawley, U.S. Senator
Earlier this week, the House voted to block federal employees from downloading the video sharing app on government devices as part of a defense policy bill.
