On Friday, Department of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced the new $6 billion package, touting that it is the biggest one to date.
The package will include updates to Ukraine’s Patriot and missile defense systems, as well as restoring ammo for other weapon systems.
Austin also echoed the Biden administration’s commitment to funding Ukraine’s war efforts by asserting that it will not let Russia begin an alleged imperial march through Europe.
“If Putin prevails in Ukraine, the security consequences will be grave and global,” the defense secretary said. “Europe would face a security threat that it hasn’t seen in our lifetimes. As President Biden has noted, Russia will not stop in Ukraine. If Kremlin gets its way. If Putin’s war of imperial aggression succeeds, every tyrant on earth will take note.”
The Pentagon chief went on to stress that the new package aims to be a longer-term approach to keeping Ukraine’s supplies stocked. He added that the war in Ukraine can take many more years to be resolved.
