Nashville Police Chief John Drake issued a statement on Wednesday, saying that his son John C. Drake Jr. was discovered dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after leading authorities on a chase in a stolen car.

“It was my prayer that no harm would come to him or anyone else,” Drake said. “I am heartbroken and saddened by the outcome. I appreciate the condolences and kind words of support as my family and I privately mourn our loss.”

Don Aaron, a spokesperson for Metro Nashville Police, claimed in a news conference on Tuesday night that Drake Jr. had stolen a car at gunpoint from a home southeast of downtown at around 6 p.m.

Drake Jr. then reportedly asked a man and woman in front of a house for a ride, and when they refused, he pulled out the same gun and demanded to take the car.

Soon after, officers located the automobile and pursued it to the Edgehill neighborhood south of downtown, where he crashed. Drake Jr. then ran to a shed behind a house, and when authorities surrounded the area, another gunshot was heard.

According to a statement released on social media by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), officers discovered Drake Jr. dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The TBI will examine Drake Jr.’s death at the request of District Attorney Glenn Funk, and a full autopsy will be performed as part of the probe.

Drake was wanted on two counts of attempted first-degree murder in connection to the shootings of officers Ashely Boleyjack and Gregory Kern. Both officers are in stable condition.
