Joe Biden gushed over the small victory of lowering the costs of prescription medication. During a speech on Tuesday, Biden announced that the Department of Health and Human Services would be reducing Medicare premiums by at least three percent in 2023. Biden claimed the move will put more money in the pockets of people who use the program.
This comes despite the fact that the current state of the economy has reportedly lost Americans more than $4,000 in their annual income since he took office. There was a premium hike in expenses earlier this year due to the high cost of a new Alzheimer’s drug.
“The Department of Health and Human Services announced that the premium for Part B will in fact, decrease this year,” Biden said. “That’s a fee you pay as a free for Medicare to cover your visits to your doctor. For years, that fees gone up now for the first time in more than a decade is going to go down. And millions of seniors and people with disabilities are on Medicare. That means more money in their pockets while still getting the care they need.”
Biden then decided to shift gears and lambast Republican lawmakers who voted against the so-called Inflation Reduction Act. He also claimed that Republicans want to get rid of programs such as Medicare and social security.
However, this claim has been debunked by the Washington Post. The news organization pointed out that Senator Rick Scott’s (R-Fla.) proposal would have Congress repeatedly vote on Medicare every five years. Additionally, they cited that Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who proposed that these programs, receives funding through the annual budget. The publication asserted that only two Republicans made the call to end Medicare and social security.
“Every single Republican voted against the Inflation Reduction Act. And when it actually came time to do something about inflation around the kitchen table, every one of them said no in the House and the Senate. And sadly it goes further. 158 House Republicans have already signed a Republican budget that will cut Medicare and social security,” Biden announced. “I know you think I’m probably exaggerating that but there’s a pamphlet, a pamphlet, a 12 point plan to rescue America by Senator Scott of Florida.”
Biden ended his speech by making a call of unity despite his seemingly endless obsession with labeling MAGA Republicans as a threat to democracy.
Recent polling has suggested that more than two-thirds of Americans view his statements regarding the America first movement as being divisive.
