Democrat Sen. Richard Blumenthal (Conn.), one of the wealthiest members of the Senate, recently gave out awards at an event associated with the Communist Party.

Over the weekend, the Connecticut Democrat presented special recognition certificates to winners of the “Amistad Award,” given by the Connecticut People’s World Committee, an affiliate of the Communist Party USA. The senator was introduced by a Communist Party member who claimed corporations are responsible for imperialism and implored everyone to join the party.

“Thank you all. This is a beautiful tribute from all our labor leaders honoring how important the Communist Party is,” said Lisa Bergmann, Communist Party USA member. “And today, now we have a very special surprise guest, our state Senator Richard Blumenthal is here to be part of the awards today and to share some appreciations and recognitions of the awardees.”

This comes as Democrats have been trying to downplay their party’s association with socialist and communist groups, with the ideology that killed an estimated 100 million people in the last century.
