Sen. Richard Blumenthal (R-Conn.) doubled down on his calls for Facebook’s CEO to testify before the Senate following a whistleblower’s claims. In an interview Wednesday, the Republican lawmaker said Mark Zuckerberg has an obligation to tell the public about how his company is weaponizing hate speech and endangering children.
His remarks came after whistleblower Frances Haugen testified before the Senate Commerce Subcommittee Tuesday. She claimed Facebook’s executives refuse to make any changes because they choose profits over people. Blumenthal, who chairs the committee, pointed out that our children are the ones who are the victims.
“Teens today looking at themselves in the mirror feel doubt and insecurity,” stated the senator. “Mark Zuckerberg ought to be looking at himself in the mirror today. And yet, rather than taking responsibility and showing leadership, Mr. Zuckerberg is going sailing.”

Blumenthal said the committee will be inviting Zuckerberg to testify before the panel. He added, the tech executive has an obligation to address these concerns to the public in person rather than a message to employees.
