Democrat Sen. Amy Klobuchar (Minn.) has admitted Facebook and other Big Tech giants were stirring up political division in the U.S. Speaking after a congressional hearing with a Facebook whistleblower, Klobuchar called for a reform of regulations for social media.
The Democrat added social media giants ran algorithms to shape public opinion.
“A lot of this has to do with transparency with the algorithms, and their admission, which we need to hear this is done for profit,” she asserted. “Facebook every quarter gets $51 on each and every one of you in America. $51 per user per quarter on advertising revenue. That’s because they’re taking their data and then they’re putting it out and they don’t care if you’re eight years old or 13 years old.”

Former Facebook employee Frances Haugen accused the company of misleading its investors and the public as well as highlighted its failure to ensure a safe user experience on its platform. The whistleblower said CEO Mark Zuckerberg held a very powerful role with no accountability.
“Mark holds a very unique role in the tech industry and that he holds over 55 percent of all the voting shares for Facebook,” she explained. “There are no similarly powerful companies that are as he unilaterally controlled and in the end, the buck stops with Mark. There is no one hurt currently holding Mark accountable by himself.”
Haugen added Facebook made $40 billion a year and consistently put profits before people.
