Hundreds of demonstrators have taken to the streets of New York City to protest the new vaccine mandate for teachers. The COVID-19 vaccine mandate for all New York City teachers and staff went into effect on Monday.
If teachers and staff decided against receiving the vaccine, they would be faced with unpaid leave as of Monday. Reports have indicated at least 97 percent of the city’s teachers union members have already received the vaccine.
“As of now, 95 percent of all full time DOE employees,” stated New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D). “…An amazing effort and I want everyone to know, since the mandate was announced for our schools August 23, over 43,000 doses given to employees of our public schools.”

Last week, multiple teachers and school faculty sued for an emergency injunction against the mandate, but it was denied by the Supreme Court. Protesters argued they should have a choice with what to do with their own bodies.
The large protest on Monday temporarily shut down Manhattan-bound lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge has since reopened.
