Some residents in Caracas, Venezuela have feared to return home after heavy gang violence in the area. Earlier this month, residents in a Venezuelan neighborhood had reportedly been sheltering in place as they were just one of several communities affected by shootings between gangs and police.

This comes as clashes between police and a gang in northwestern Caracas earlier this month reportedly left over two dozen people dead. Some residents have expressed concerns over returning home.

“Beyond the mortal wounds of the people who died in this situation, we are trying to see how we can recover from the emotional wounds of many people,” local Priest Wilfredo Corniel expressed. “…Homes are deserted and how do you help to recover an emotional peace for all those who live in this area in particular.”

Some say clashes between gangs and police in Venezuela are a sign the president is losing control over parts of the country.
