A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s motorcycle deputy was killed after a traffic collision. On Thursday, Deputy Thomas Albanese was fatally struck by a car in what investigators believe was likely an accident.

According to officials, Albanese was in the middle of a traffic stop when he was hit by a car driving through the same intersection. The opposing driver, whose name has not been disclosed, appeared to have the green light and was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Albanese had been with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for nearly eight years. He was reportedly killed instantly.

“He will be missed,” Sheriff Alex Villanueva said. “He endured and survived four tours in Iraq as a 10 year veteran of the Marine Corps. A highly decorated individual.”

A GoFundMe has been created in honor of Deputy Albanese. He is survived by his wife and two young sons.
