Xavier Becerra, Joe Biden’s pick for HHS secretary, indicated he will likely keep his progressive views on late-term abortions. On Tuesday, Becerra said he hopes to reach common ground with Republicans and come together to work toward a solution.

These comments came after Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) grilled him for his history of supporting late-term abortions. While serving as a representative of California in 2003, Becerra voted against a bill aiming to ban the practice.

“I understand that we may not always agree on where to go, but I think we can find some common ground on these issues because everyone wants to make sure that if you have an opportunity, you’re gonna have a healthy life,” Becerra said.

Becerra is facing a tough road to being confirmed, as senators from both sides of the aisle are reluctant to vote to confirm him.
