California Gov. Gavin Newsom, California attorney general Xavier Becerra and California Air Resources Board Chair Mary Nichols held a news conference in response to the Trump Administration's plan to revoke California’s waiver to establish vehicle emissions standards for greenhouse gas emissions and standards to require manufacturers to sell zero emissions vehicles. Under the federal Clean Air Act, California is allowed to set its own vehicle emissions standards that are at least as protective as the federal government’s standards. Dozens of prominent conservatives are urging the Senate to vote down Joe Biden’s pick to lead the Health and Human Services Department.

In a scathing memo to congressional Republicans on Monday, more than 100 Republicans called Xavier Becerra an extremist nominee who will carry the agenda of liberal dark money groups. They also said the California Democrat has not shown the judgment or respect for human life necessary to lead the agency.

“The president nominated Attorney General Becerra because he felt he was exactly the right person to lead the Department of Health and Human Services at this time,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said.

They went on to warn lawmakers the agency will become weaponized to partisan and destructive ends if he is confirmed.
