According to reports on Thursday morning, high-level officials said the move could be ‘warranted’ per the Special Counsel Statute. Republicans have been urging the department to appoint a special counsel to ensure the investigation into Hunter Biden’s tax affairs continues.

President Trump has also signaled that he is in favor of appointing someone to the position.

This came as former Attorney General William Barr stepped down on Wednesday, which leaves the decision up to acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen.
