According to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar, the country is facing a national crisis like it’s never seen before amid rising numbers of COVID-19 cases.
During a recent interview, Azar reiterated the country has plenty of tools to aid in combating COVID-19. However, he stressed the importance of Americans doing their part to stop the spread of infection to others.
He argued although the U.S. is in a much better situation than it was two months ago, the virus still poses a threat. The HHS secretary then underscored the limited time the United States has before the virus becomes uncontrollable and causes further damage to states.
“The window is closing, we have to act, and people as individuals have to act responsibly,” stated Azar. “We need to social distance, we need to wear our face coverings if we’re in settings where we can’t social distance, particularly in these hot zones.”
He suggested hospitalizations and deaths could increase in the coming weeks as a late indicator of how dire the situation has become.
Governors in Florida, California, Nevada and Georgia reported record high daily cases and paused reopening indefinitely earlier this week.
