Several states are suing the NCAA over the organization’s limits on college athlete transfers.

On Thursday, a group of seven state attorneys general announced that they had filed a lawsuit claiming that the transfer eligibility rule is “an illegal restraint on college athletes.”
The NCAA exempted first-time transfers from the rule back in 2021.
However, attorneys allege that denying other athletes the ability to transfer, without having to wait a year to play, strips them of the opportunity to optimize their own welfare.
“This is an antitrust parlance, a no-poach agreement among horizontal competitors, and a clear violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act,” Dave Yost, the Ohio Attorney General said.
State attorneys are also seeking a preliminary injunction against the association to stop it from enforcing the transfer rule.
