On Friday, Rep. Conor Lamb (D-Pa.) jumped into the race to replace retiring Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.). The National Republican Congressional Committee congratulated Lamb’s decision to run for Senate in a statement.

The organization said he is “opting to protect his own political ambitions rather than sticking around to clean up the disastrous mess he and House Democrats have created.” Meanwhile, Republicans have been targeting Lamb’s seat even before his announcement and consider it a pickup opportunity in their bid to take back the lower chamber.

“Campaigns are marathons, but the Democrat candidates in Pennsylvania are already sprinting as far left as possible, embracing Bernie Sanders’ agenda to ban fracking and destroy Pennsylvania energy jobs and agreeing with the Demorats’ reckless tax and spending spree,” said NRSC spokeswoman Lizzie Litzow.

In the meantime, Lamb faces opponents Eric Orts, a business professor, and Lt. Gov. John Fetterman.
