Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley announced peace is a “fraying edge” as the U.S. fights to compete with China. During his remarks at the Air Force Academy commencement on Wednesday, Milley discussed the growing tensions among world powers in the 76th year since WWII.
He went on to say that the United States is engaged in a great power struggle with both China and Russia. This competition has become more difficult to remain competitive without sparking conflict. He stated the country that achieves the most will have a critical advantage for the next war.
Milley warned of the changes to technology and tactics by stating America must remain at the front of the pack. He urged the graduates to maintain their leadership skills and technological innovation they have learned throughout their time at the Academy.
“Each and every one of you are going to be fundamental to our nation’s defense in the years to come,” he asserted. “It will be you that leads our country safely through the next 20 years.”
The four-star general has also criticized China for their recent lack of transparency. He argues that since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in attempts by the Chinese government to cover up relative information.
