The sole woman on death row is seeking clemency from President Trump. Tuesday, attorneys for Lisa Montgomery urged the President to change her sentence to life in prison just a week before her scheduled execution on death row.
Montgomery was convicted of kidnapping and strangling a pregnant woman in 2007. Her lawyers argued that she suffered as a victim of neglect and repeated sexual torture early on in life, causing her to be mentally ill and out of touch with reality.
“That’s why we’re asking now President Trump to please hear our plea,” Montgomery’s attorney Kelley Henry said. “He can be a hero in this case. He can be a hero for women who’ve been victims of sex trafficking. He can make a very public statement about the importance of ending the stigmatization of mental illness.”
Montgomery’s lawyer also noted that no other woman who has committed a similar crime has received the death penalty.
Attorneys said this, along with her mental diagnosis, should be enough evidence for her sentence to be altered.
