The Minnesota National Guard is gearing up to head back to the city of Minneapolis.
According to recent reports, the guard is preparing for a ‘massive deployment’ ahead of the trial for four former police officers who were charged in the death of George Floyd.
The mission, dubbed ‘Operation Safety Net,’ calls for the deployment of every guard member for at least two months in the event of another round of ‘civil unrest.’
As part of the plan, vehicles and equipment have already been put into a position to quickly roll out.
“It’s one of those things where we have to be prepared for that kind of operation,” Col. Scott Rohweder stated. “And change the paradigm of our thinking to make sure that we’re prepared at any moment’s notice to activate that kind of a large-scale force.”
The officers’ trial is slated to begin on March 8. Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) may issue the order to mobilize before the end of February.
Defense attorneys are seeking to delay the trial in order to have more time to prepare, according to reports.
