Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Rome where he thanked a Catholic charity for their humanitarian work across the globe. He met with top religious leaders Thursday and residents at the Sant’egidio Community charity’s headquarters.
“It’s truly a blessing for me to come see this place, you do such remarkable works,” said the secretary. “The State Department has worked with you all for a long time, we will continue to do so.”
Pompeo’s visit took place just one day after he participated in a conference urging the Vatican to crackdown on China’s humanitarian violations against “religious and ethnic minorities.” He praised religious freedom and the charity’s work across the world.
“The work that you’ve done to take of the people in the world who are the most needy and most difficult conditions is truly remarkable, it’s the lord’s work,” he stated.

Pompeo is set to continue his tour of Italy while meeting with officials at the Pontifical North American College in Rome and the Villa Borghese Gallery on Thursday.
