President Joe Biden is under fire after making a “joke” and comparing one of the deadliest United States wildfire tragedies to almost losing his corvette and his cat.

On Monday, the 46th president and the first lady traveled to the most affected areas of Maui and met with local community officials. The couple appeared in a news conference in Maui speaking on the tragic fires when Biden abruptly compared the recent tragedy to a time where he almost lost his car.

During his speech, the president said he knew how it felt to lose a home.

“I don’t want to compare difficulties but we have a little sense, Jill and I, of what it’s like to lose a home,” he said. “Years ago now, 15 years ago, I was in Washington doing Meet the Press. It was a sunny Sunday.”

“Lightning struck at home, on a little lake that’s outside of our home—not a lake, a big pond,—and hit a wire that came up underneath our home into the heating ducts and air conditioning ducts,” he added. “To make a long story short, I almost lost my wife, my ’67 Corvette, and my cat.”

The president was then accused of being insensitive to Maui’s devastating tragedy.

Additionally, Biden joked around about how “hot” the ground was to the firefighters risking their lives.

“You guys catch the boots out here? That’s a hot ground, man,” he said with a smirk.

So far, the devastating fires have killed an estimated 480 individuals. Over 800 people are still missing.

Governor Josh Green (D-Hawaii) stated on Sunday that the majority of people missing are most likely children.
