Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Friday that United States Attorney David Weiss will be appointed special counsel in the Hunter Biden investigation.

Weiss is tasked with the “ongoing investigation” of President Joe Biden’s son “as well as for any other matters that arose or may arise from the investigation,” according to the Justice Department.

“I’m here today to announce the appointment of David Weiss as a special counsel consistent with the Department of Justice regulations governing such matters. In keeping with those regulations, I have today notified the designated members of each House of Congress of the appointment,” Garland said at a press conference in Washington, D.C.

Weiss was already overseeing the Hunter Biden probe and asked to be appointed special counsel on Tuesday. Garland agreed saying that it was “in the public interest” to do so.

Contrary to Biden’s defense lawyer’s claims, Weiss’ appointment as special counsel indicates that an investigation into Hunter Biden is not over.

House Judiciary Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) disagreed with the appointment in a statement issued through a spokesman.

“David Weiss can’t be trusted and this is just a new way to whitewash the Biden family’s corruption. Weiss has already signed off on a sweetheart plea deal that was so awful and unfair that a federal judge rejected it. We will continue to pursue facts brought to light by brave whistleblowers as well as Weiss’s inconsistent statements to Congress.” said Jordan’s spokesman Russell Dye.

Garland has named two other special counsels since he took over the Justice Department in 2021.

In November 2022, Jack Smith was appointed as special counsel to conduct investigations into 45th President Donald Trump.

In January of this year, Garland named Robert Hur to investigate classified documents that were found in Joe Biden’s residence.
