Former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, will be the United Kingdom’s next Prime Minister.
On Monday, it was announced that Sunak’s only rival, Penny Mordaunt, was dropping out of the race to replace outgoing leader Liz Truss. Following former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s withdrawal on Sunday, Sunak was the only Conservative Party MP to get the backing of over 100 of his fellow Parliamentarians.
As Prime Minister, Sunak is now tasked with steering a country that is going through a turbulent economic downturn.
“The United Kingdom is a great country, but there is no doubt we face a profound economic challenge,” Sunak said. “We need stability and unity, and I will make it my utmost priority to bring our party and our country together.”
Sunak will make his mark on British history by being the first person of color to lead the country. In addition, Sunak will be the first PM with Indian heritage, the first to be of the Hindu faith, and at 42, he will also be the youngest Prime Minister in more than 200 years.
