Secretary of State Antony Blinken is reportedly trying to stabilize relations with China after Joe Biden’s latest remarks about Taiwan.
In a statement released by the State Department on Thursday, it was announced that Blinken is set to meet with China’s Foreign Minister. The two will discuss a number of topics.
This comes after Chinese diplomats issued a complaint over Biden’s 60 Minutes interview. In the interview, the President stated that the United States would defend Taiwan should it be invaded by China. CCP officials stressed that Taiwan is part of China and that such rhetoric may hurt Sino-American relations.
Zhao Lijian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, spoke about the U.S. and China’s relationship and the future goals for the two countries moving forward.
“We hope that the U.S. will work with China to find a way for two major powers with different social systems and histories and cultures to get along with each other and cooperate for win-win results,” Lijian said. “It not only benefits the people of two countries, but also contributes to world peace, stability and development.”
The Biden administration says it upholds the Taiwan Relations Act, which allows diplomats to engage with Taiwan and China separately. Blinken is set to meet with Chinese diplomats on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday.
