The Biden administration is considering sending Ukraine military equipment that was supposed to go to Afghanistan, after leaving thousands of dollars worth of weaponry there during the U.S. withdrawal. Since the withdrawal in August, the U.S. military has halted sending equipment to the region.

U.S. officials recently confirmed the talks, adding Ukraine is seeking defense equipment as Russian troops reportedly continue to amass along their border. Ukrainian officials have been reportedly lobbying the administration to provide them with modern defense systems in order to fairly compete with Russia.

“Our concern is that Russia may make the serious mistake of attempting to rehash what it undertook back in 2014, when it amassed forces along the border, crossed into sovereign Ukrainian territory and did so claiming…falsely…that it was provoked,” said Secretary of State Antony Blinken last week.

Meanwhile, Pentagon officials seem to be on board with the plan, but the requests haven’t been approved yet. For now, over 100 Florida National Guard troops have been training Ukrainian soldiers in the country, but no U.S. military has been deployed.
