Robert Durst has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his so-called best friend more than 20 years ago.
A Los Angeles County courtroom sealed Durst’s fate on Thursday as the 78-year-old millionaire was also denied parole and a request for a new trial. Durst’s sentencing comes a month after he was convicted of first-degree murder for the death of Susan Berman back in 2000, a crime in which he has continued to deny any involvement in.
Several of Berman’s loved ones gave statements to the court saying they were robbed of an extraordinary person.
Deni Marcus, Berman’s cousin, said “I know she’s got her hand right here, she’s on my shoulder, and she knows that I would do anything for her.” She added that she couldn’t hate Durst because Berman always told her that “hate serves no purpose.”
In the meantime, lawyers for Durst said he intends to appeal his conviction.
