Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley has continued to defend his secret talks with Chinese generals behind President Trump’s back. During Wednesday’s House hearing, Milley claimed U.S. intelligence had determined that China was worried about a potential U.S. attack.

Milley said he reassured Beijing that would not happen, but admitted he would be calling China in case of an escalation. He insisted his actions were not undermining President Trump as commander-in-chief.

“What I said to the call to China was I guarantee you that President Trump is not going to attack you in a surprise attack. I was carrying out his [President Trump] intent,” claimed Milley.

Republican lawmakers called on Milley to resign, saying his actions didn’t represent the best interest of the American people. This comes after a book, co-authored by Washington Post correspondents Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, revealed Milley held secret calls with his Chinese counterpart.
