The Justice Department has announced a lawsuit aimed at Georgia’s new election law. On Friday, Attorney General Merrick Garland explained the DOJ’s decision to sue the state of Georgia was due to a violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
The state’s election law was passed back in March and has repeatedly come under fire by Democrats who insist it imposes unfair restrictions on voters.
“In March of 2021, Georgia’s legislature passed SB 202. Many of that law’s provisions make it harder for people to vote,” Garland claimed. “The complaint alleges that the state enacted those restrictions with the purpose of denying or abridging the right to vote on account of race or color.”

However, the law actually expanded early voting in most counties and shifted more election control to the state legislature. Reports have mentioned the suit marks the first major voting rights action taken by the Biden administration.
In a statement released on Friday, President Trump argued the suit should be vice versa with the people of Georgia suing the state for running a corrupt election. He warned if the issues weren’t addressed head on, the integrity of the country would be jeopardized.
Georgia Gov. Brain Kemp (R) weighed in on the measure as well.
“Their thoughts and baseless accusations are quite honestly disgusting, but I can’t say I’m surprised,” he expressed. “The President and his administration, Stacy Abrams and their far-left allies have lied about the election integrity act from the beginning.”
This lawsuit is born out of the lies and misinformation the Biden administration has pushed against Georgia’s Election Integrity Act from the start. Joe Biden, Stacey Abrams, and their allies tried to force an unconstitutional elections power grab through Congress – and failed.

Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger accused the Biden administration of weaponizing the DOJ to carry out a far-left agenda that undermines election integrity.
“I explained that the Justice Department is rededicating its resources to enforcing federal law and to protecting the franchise for all eligible voters,” Garland explained. “I promised that we are scrutinizing new laws that seek to curb voter access and that where we see violations of federal law, we will act.”
Raffensperger went on to say he looks forward to meeting and beating them in court.
