A birthday party promoted on social media exploded as people flocked to Huntington Beach, California, which prompted police to declare an unlawful assembly late Friday. According to reports, the party started as an online birthday invitation when the hashtag #AdriansKickback started trending online.

The details of the party spread after the promotion garnered about 3 million views on TikTok. People started heading to Huntington Beach, about 40 miles south of Los Angeles, ahead of the weekend.

Police declared an unlawful assembly after several hundred partiers had already shown up in town. Saturday saw the main event, with upwards of a thousand people swarming the beach.

Police warned visitors heading into the city that steps were taken to prepare for a potential increase in visitors. They reminded partygoers of no alcohol or drugs on the beach, no fireworks and the closure of the beach at 10 p.m. Attendees said they were starved for entertainment after a long pandemic.

“Don’t you remember when you were young, you used to want to go have fun, have parties,” one attendee mentioned. “We kind of lacked that this year because of COVID.”

As the gathering headed into the evening, partiers could be seen climbing on trees, flag poles and lifeguard stations. They also used fireworks, one of which exploded in a crowd that sent people running.

Police declared an unlawful assembly due to unruly crowds. They also established an emergency curfew just before midnight into early Sunday for the downtown area. At least one arrest was reported.
