One person is dead and at least eight others are injured in New York after a vehicle crashed into an ambulance and caused it to flip over.

On Sunday, authorities said the ambulance was heading to a local hospital carrying a 95-year-old woman inside who was said to be in cardiac arrest. Police said the woman unfortunately did not survive, though it’s unclear whether she died from injuries related to the crash.

Witnesses told reporters that dozens of bystanders leaped into action to help tend to the victims.

“Everybody was just helping each other out and trying to make sure everybody was good,” recounted Yonelby Almanzar, a Brooklyn resident. “But you could see the ambulance workers just working their way out of the car and being helped by passersby.”

Local authorities said an investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
