A major Louisiana interstate was shut down during rush hour traffic following a tanker truck explosion.

On Friday, the incident happened on the eastbound Interstate-12 in Livingston Parish. Officials said the truck was holding unknown hazardous materials and rear-ended a police unit, which pushed it off the side of the highway.

Both drivers were hospitalized with moderate injuries.

“Actually, last week was our move-over campaign and we encourage drivers who see emergency vehicles with their emergency lights activated to move over to the right lane if at all possible,” Taylor Scrantz, Louisiana State Police Public Information Officer, said. “This is just another example of why we ask that.”

Scrantz added the Louisiana State Police Department is very thankful its trooper is okay along with the truck driver. He noted the accident caused quite an ordeal for the motoring public on their morning commute, but could have been much worse. There were no other injuries reported.

Hazmat crews remained on scene to secure the area and access the hazardous materials.
