Officials in Australia are locking down specific areas around the country in order to combat the surging number of new COVID-19 cases. On Tuesday, health officials in the state of Victoria reported 64 new virus infections with more than 7,000 active cases around the country.
In a press briefing, Victorian State Premier Daniel Andrews ordered residents in 10 zip codes to stay home for the next four weeks and only travel to work or to stores to buy essential items. The new measures are being put in place to decrease the spread of the coronavirus and police are set to enforce the restrictions.
“On enforcement, Victoria police will be actively, actively enforcing these suburban lockdowns, this stay-at-home order,” he announced. “They will be patrolling throughout these communities and if people are out of their home, then they will be politely asked ‘why are you out of your home?’ And if you are out of your home for anything other than a permitted reason, then financial penalties apply.”
