California may be forced to halt its reopening process as coronavirus cases continue to rise in the area. On Friday, Governor Gavin Newsom announced he’s working with officials to reinstate a stay-at-home order in Imperial County after it saw a 23% positivity rate in the past week.
He added there are over a dozen other counties on a “watch list” that could potentially face the same fate if changes aren’t made.
San Francisco has already delayed their next reopening phase, which was scheduled for Monday.
“These trend lines over the last seven days, over the last 14 days, are disturbing,” stated Newsom. “I cannot impress upon people more to wear these masks when they cannot practice physical distancing, to continue to be vigilant about the spread of this virus.”
California has seen more than 200,000 cases with a nearly 6% positivity rate over the past seven days. This comes as several other states have had to pause their reopening plans amid a surge in COVID-19 cases.
