According to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, there is a “significant amount of evidence” that the coronavirus came from a lab in Wuhan, China. Though he declined to say whether or not he believes the virus was intentionally released, he emphasized China’s ruling party has refused to cooperate with world health experts.
“The Chinese Communist Party continues to block access to the Western world, the world’s best scientists, refusing to cooperate with world health experts to figure out exactly what happened,” tweeted Pompeo. “This unacceptable during an ongoing threat, an ongoing pandemic.”
The secretary also claimed the country has created an enormous risk and now people around the world, including thousands in the U.S., have paid the price. He has accused the nation’s communist party of running a “disinformation effort” in the early days of the pandemic.
“The Chinese Communist Party did all that it could to make sure that the world didn’t learn in a timely fashion about what was taking place. There’s lots of evidence of that, some of it you can see in public, right? We’ve seen announcements. We’ve seen the fact that they kicked the journalists out. We saw the fact that those who were trying to report on this, medical professionals inside of China, were silenced. They shut down reporting, all the kind of things that authoritarian regimes do, the way communist parties operate. This is a classic communist disinformation effort.”

The secretary added the country has a history of running substandard labs. He noted this is not the first time the world has been exposed to a virus due to failures in a Chinese lab.
