A spokesperson for Schumer spoke with Fox News and officially announced that “Ruben Gallego and David McCormick have been invited to attend orientation.”
However, Schumer initially stated that he was not going to invite McCormick to the orientation, claiming that the Republican had not yet been declared the winner. Nevertheless, this was despite the Associated Press (AP) calling the race in his favor over three-term Democratic incumbent Senator Bob Casey last Thursday.
The AP called the race at 4:09 p.m. on Thursday, with McCormick ahead by over 30,000 votes. The AP stated that there were not enough votes in Casey-supporting areas for him to make up the difference.
It wasn’t until Monday night that the AP announced Gallego’s Senate win against Republican Kari Lake. The Republicans had a 53-47 majority after the last Senate race was called.
Independent Senator Kyrsten Sinema, a former Democrat, will be replaced by Gallego.
Casey has yet to concede in the race for Pennsylvania. According to the Pennsylvania elections results website, McCormick was ahead of Casey by 35,063 votes as of Tuesday morning.
A Schumer representative reiterated to Fox News Digital that McCormick was not invited at the time because the contest had not “been decided” and that there were still “over 100,000 ballots left to be counted” in Pennsylvania’s Senate race, echoing Schumer’s assertion.
