On Tuesday, Harris broke her 32nd Senate tie. This has now makes her the vice president who has broken the most ties in U.S. history.
The previous record holder was Andrew Jackson’s Vice President John Calhoun. Calhoun was a slavery supporting Democrat from South Carolina. He broke 31 ties before leaving office in 1832.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) praised Harris for making history.
“I join all of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle thanking the vice president for her leadership and making the work of the Senate possible,” Schumer said. “The record Vice President Harris sets today is significant, not just because of the number, but because of what she’s made possible with tiebreaking votes.”
Schumer went on the praise Harris for being the tie-breaker on The Inflation Reduction Act, which was followed by record price increases.
He later presented her with a golden gavel.
