Two New York police officers were shot, one fatally, in an ambush-style attack. The Rochester Police Department said a suspect opened fire on the officers around 9:00 p.m. on Thursday.
“I am angry and upset because all too often we are seeing over and over again blatant disregard for life,” Rochester Mayor Malik Evans said. “Be it an old woman on her porch or a 10-year-old girl braiding her mother’s hair and now an officer, in the line of duty working to keep our city safe.”
Both officers were taken to local hospitals in varying conditions. Sources confirmed that 29-year-old department Veteran Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz later died from his injuries. A woman was also shot during the incident, but only sustained minor wounds and was treated at the scene.
Rochester, NY Police Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz was a 29-year veteran whose commitment to his community never waned. Last night, he was shot and killed, and his partner shot and injured. “This is a tragedy for our community,” he voiced. “I’m asking Rochester to pray for these officers and their families. They go out every day and put their lives on the line and while there are some people who sit on the sidelines, these guys are on the front lines, trying to keep our community safe. We ask for prayers for these officers, their families, the RPD and the entire city of Rochester.”
UPDATE: Mayor @realmalikevans visited one of the officers injured at Strong Memorial Hospital earlier this evening. Their condition is still unknown. The mayor can be seen walking out of the emergency entrance before greeting some officers, then leaving. #ROC pic.twitter.com/imp09OApYv
