Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned Russian leaders they will face trial for their invasion. During a video address on Thursday, he said the invasion of Ukraine will backfire and Russian leaders will be prosecuted for their “complicity in war crimes.”
The Ukrainian president added, his heart is broken for what is happening in Ukraine and Russian troops have created a “humanitarian catastrophe” in the country. His speech came after three people, including a child, were reportedly killed by a Russian airstrike on a children’s hospital Wednesday. Additionally, Zelensky also accused Russian troops of humiliating the Ukrainian population.
“But for them it is part of the plan; they want to humiliate our people,” he stated. “Make them go on their knees and take bread and water from the hands of the invaders, so that Ukrainians can save their lives just by going to the occupied territories or to Russia.”
Thousands of refugees are still hoping to make use of six humanitarian corridors open so far despite ceasefire negotiations falling through Thursday.
Powerful appeal of @ZelenskyyUa in Russian to those who believe in pro-Kremlin propaganda. “I am the president of an adequate country and an adequate people. I am the father of two children. Meanwhile, Zelensky said claims by Russia that Ukraine is trying to develop biological weapons is all projection. Also on Thursday, he said an almost sure-fire way to know what Russia’s plans are is to see what their state media’s accusing others of doing.
In recent days, Russia has claimed the U.S. is working with Ukraine to develop bioweapons, which is something both countries deny. Zelensky’s remarks came after Russia’s Defense Ministry accused Ukraine of staging the attack on a maternity hospital in Mariupol.
Zelensky worries Russia’s accusations mean they could potentially be prepared to deploy chemical weapons in Ukraine. Russia has called an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting to discuss the alleged bio-labs.
