A fire at a hospital in western India left at least 11 patients dead and injured several more.
Indian officials said at least 11 people have died as a result of a blaze, which erupted in the COVID-19 ward of a hospital in a western state in India. Reports have indicated 17 patients were in the ward when the fire erupted with the remaining patients being moved to wards in nearby hospitals.
The source of the blaze is still under investigation, though reports indicate an electrical circuit failure led to the fire.
“Seventeen COVID-19 patients were receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ward an 11 patients died due to the fire. The fire broke out due to a short circuit. I have visited the hospital and have talked to the six injured patients,” said Bharati Pravin Pawar, the Maharashtra Health Minister.

The incident comes after several other electrical fires throughout India have killed dozens of patients over the past year. Past incidents have been blamed on poor maintenance of machines, equipment malfunctions and a lack of proper equipment for firemen.
