The Miami-Dade District Attorney has tapped a grand jury to probe the Surfside condo collapse in Florida. As the search and rescue efforts continue in the rubble of the beachfront condos, Florida prosecutors are pursuing a grand jury investigation.
In a statement on Tuesday, Miami-Dade District Attorney Katherine Rundle said the investigation would examine factors which led to the partial collapse of the 12-story building, which was 40-years old. Previously, Rundle had already sent a senior prosecutor to the site on the morning of the collapse to collaborate with engineers and investigators.

Depending on the evidence, the grand jury would also have the power to bring forth criminal charges. Grand juries in South Florida have examined other major high-profile disasters such as the deadly pedestrian bridge collapse at Florida International University back in 2018.
According to reports, the bridge had numerous design flaws and killed six people when it collapsed.
As plans are in the works for a grand jury probe, a growing number of lawsuits have been launched against the condo association. Meanwhile, the Miami-Dade mayor has ordered an audit of all buildings more than 40-years old in the area following the building’s collapse.
