Despite backlash from the radical left, Republicans in Arizona have been fighting for election integrity.
Amid the ongoing election audit in Maricopa County, state Rep. Jake Hoffman (R) weighed in on Republican efforts to strengthen voter laws for upcoming elections.
During an interview on Monday, Hoffman discussed their latest election integrity bills at the state’s capitol. He explained if the first bill, titled HB 2792, was passed then the highly concerning mass mailing of ballots to voters that are not requested would be banned.
“Arizona is saying absolutely not to that,” he asserted. “We’re adding a Class 5 felony, so that there is a very stiff penalty if an election official decides to go rogue and willfully violate the law.”
Despite push back from Democrats, such as Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, Hoffman expects the bill to pass in the state Senate. This vote is currently in the process.
Hoffman went on to explain the details behind another election integrity bill, HB 2794, which bans modifying previously agreed upon election deadlines. Violators of this statute could face a Class 6 felony.
The bill was drafted after progressive advocacy groups pushed a federal judge in Arizona to extend the voter registration deadline for an additional 10 days in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
Some poll workers, such as recorder Ann Rodriguez from Pima County, argued that extending registration had a “domino effect” and made it difficult for election officials to finish counting votes by the deadline. For the 2020 election, Arizona votes were delayed.
Hoffman asserted that mainstream media and Democrats’ claims of voter suppression are simply false.
“To think that that somehow suppresses the vote or disenfranchises voters is simply false and fictitious,” he stated. “Quite honestly, they should be ashamed of themselves for spinning such wild conspiracy theories.”
Hoffman stressed the purpose of this bill is to ensure election integrity for all parties. He believes election integrity should not be a partisan issue.
“Election integrity isn’t about Republicans, it isn’t about Democrats…it’s about doing what’s right on behalf of the people that we represent,” he argued. “Regardless of the fact that we as Republicans gained the advantage during that period, we said no to that practice and shut it down.”
