Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) said restaurants in New York City should be able to resume indoor dining beginning Valentine’s Day. On Friday, Cuomo said the plan would allow eateries to serve patrons at 25 percent capacity.

The New York governor ordered restaurants in the city to halt indoor dining in December, but now he said if the rate of COVID-19 infections continues to decline, indoor dining can resume on February 14.

“The restaurants want a period of time so they can notify workers, they can get up to speed for indoor dining, order supplies, et cetera,” Cuomo stated. “So we’re saying indoor dining, 25 percent on Valentine’s Day.”

Many restaurant owners said the 25 percent reopening plan is not enough to turn a profit and that they would actually be losing money. Restaurants across the rest of the state have already allowed indoor dining at 50 percent capacity despite having higher infection rates.
