In an employee townhall Thursday, United CEO Scott Kirby said he wants to make it mandatory because he is confident the vaccine is safe and he wants to ensure the safety of employees and customers.

However, Kirby said more companies need to be on board with the plan for it to work.

Other airlines, including Southwest and American, highly encourage their employees to get vaccinated, but do not currently require it.
