Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.-D) announced she’s stepping down as the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee after receiving backlash from the progressive wing of her party.
The 87-year old senator made the announcement on Monday, revealing she will focus her next term on battling two major existential threats in California: wildfires and drought.
Even though Feinstein claimed she is demoting herself to focus on issues within her own state, many believe it’s an excuse to protect herself from the far-left progressives who want to cancel her.
Following Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation hearings in October, the senator faced major criticism within her own party for thanking Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) for holding a fair hearing. The Californian expressed the desire to promote bipartisan legislation in Congress, which was extremely controversial in the Democrat Party.
The senator’s remarks not only undermined the DNC’s narrative against the confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s, but it also elevated Graham’s public image. He, of course, went on to win his reelection by a landslide when the polls suggested his South Carolina seat was a toss-up.
Furthermore, Feinstein is in favor of keeping the filibuster, which is a political procedure many Democrats want to abandon in order to pass progressive policies in Congress that are likely to receive Republican opposition.
For these reasons, leftists have questioned her loyalty to her party, including organizations such as Demand Justice and NARAL Pro-Choice America who demanded her to step down from her position.
Several Republican’s defended the moderate Democrat by arguing the attacks on the senator prove the Democrat Party has shifted very far to the left from when Feinstein was first elected in 1992.
The ordeal sheds a light on the next generation of Democrat lawmakers who are willing to tear down their colleagues if if they do not agree with their radical agenda.
