Department of Health & Human Services Secretary Alex Azar dismissed claims by certain media outlets that President Trump pressured the FDA into approving convalescent plasm” as a coronavirus treatment.
During an interview Wednesday, Azar said the process to get its approval was well underway before the president made the big announcement Sunday. He also noted that “speed matters” and said the U.S. is using the proper channels to ensure any virus cure or vaccine is safe.
“We have got move as quickly as possible, our normal timelines just can’t hold,” Azar explained. “We’ve got to move fast, the president insists on that, but we’re also going to insist that products whether therapeutics or vaccines meet the FDA’s standards of data and evidence to meet the regulatory requirement.”
